A bridge is a unit crown (two or more) used to replace one or more missing teeth. This can be from any angle, whether front or back. Bridges are fixed in such a way that they are cemented on the supporting teeth for balance. In some cases, bridges could be fixed on an implant placed next to the supporting teeth.
Why We Recommend Bridges
The dormant space left by any missing teeth may cause the surrounding teeth to slowly shift into the depression over time. This can be caused by ongoing pressure from such regular actions as chewing. This eventual shift could cause a degree of misalignment in one’s bite, which subsequently results in problems with the jaw joint and maintenance of oral hygiene.
Misaligned teeth are difficult to clean due to the deformation, making them susceptible to infection, accumulation of debris, decay, and probable additional tooth loss. The bridge fixing procedure only takes two or more visits to our dental facility.
Bridge Material Options
Bridges are mainly constructed with gold, ceramics, porcelain, alloys, and porcelain fused to metal. Traditional bridges, which involve creating a crown on both sides of a missing tooth, with a ‘pontic’ in the middle, is usually best matched with ceramics or porcelain fused to metal. A resin-bonded bridge is constructed best with metal, or porcelain fused to metal.
The Dental Bridge Procedure
The first visit to our facility for a dental bridge usually starts with prep work. The supporting teeth, which are usually the ones located on either side of the missing teeth are prepped by structural reconstruction. This is done by shaping and drastically reducing the size of the teeth to create room for a new crown that would slide over each of them. These crowns may also function as holders of the ‘pontic’, which is the missing tooth’s replacement.
For the next stage, an impression of the supporting teeth or abutments are made using special pliable materials, or by digital means, and taken to our technical laboratory for construction. A temporary bridge will be inserted at this stage to protect the abutments as well as the space on the missing teeth.
Typically, a permanent bridge is fixed on the second visit. The custom-fit bridge is placed and adjusted to ensure proper fit and function. Any necessary adjustments will be made to the framework of the crown to also ensure the perfect fit. When the bridge has been tested and seen to be satisfactory, the cementing is done to ensure permanency.
Our team will provide post-procedural counseling to ensure the longevity of the bridge. For further information about our services and booking schedules, call us, McDonald Dental at (346) 250-3575 immediately!
