Types of Anesthesia Used By Oral Surgeons And Why They Use Them
Posted on 11/22/2021 by Kevin Nail, DDS
Oral surgery includes any procedure where a qualified specialist performs surgery on your mouth or around it. Anesthesia is a type of treatment where some drug or medication will prevent you from feeling any pain during the surgery.
All types of surgery, even oral ones, require anesthesia. However, the same medications general surgeons use are not the same as the ones oral surgeons use. Here are some types of anesthesia oral surgeons use.
It is the most common and the less invasive one. The important thing to remember about local anesthesia is that you will be awake throughout the surgery or the procedure. It is a type of anesthesia that the dentist will inject onto the tissue to numb it and save you any pain. Because of its characteristics, dentists use local anesthesia for quick procedures like cavity filling.
You may know it by the name of laughing gas. This technique involves a mix of oxygen with nitrous oxide that you will breathe through a mask in your face, specifically your nose. The main difference between this one and general anesthesia is that you will be conscious. However, the gas will relax you, and you will not feel any pain. When our dentist removes the mask, the effects will pass quickly.
When you mention anesthesia to someone, most people think about this type. In general anesthesia, they will place an intravenous catheter to give you sedatives. This sedative effect will put you in a controlled sleeping state where you will not feel or remember anything related to the procedure. You may need general anesthesia if you undergo an impacted tooth removal or dental implant placement. Please contact us for more information on the types of anesthesia used by oral surgeons.
