Understanding Invisalign

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Kevin Nail, DDS
Understanding InvisalignThe nature of truths is that they are occasionally tough to bear. Unfortunately, no one is born perfect. This extends into any aspect of life; however, today we we address the imperfections surrounding malocclusions and the general organizing of teeth. Our teeth, at birth, help us eat correctly, communicate clearly, and help us in many other miscellaneous ways. Our teeth see a lot of wear and tear, and for many, malocclusion does not help make wear and tear any easier. Invisalign exists to aid that struggle.

What Invisalign is, How it Works, and Other Fun Facts

In 1997, two Stanford students invented Invisalign. Invisalign consists of two clear plastic retainers that look a bit like mouth guards. These mouthguards work by applying gentle gradual pressure on teeth through various sets until the final set settles the ideal smile and bite. We determine smile and bite using the latest software and hardware. The plastic used is safe, and because it lacks wires or brackets, means that is less obtrusive. During mealtime, you can even remove the plastic aligners for comfortable eating.

The way Invisalign works is by applying a gentle pressure over a long period of time. Traditional braces work by placing brackets strategically on teeth, and placing a wire through them. The wire helps to spring back to its arch shape and ideally guides the teeth along with it. This system can be cumbersome and painful during adjustment appointments. Invisalign works by skipping that process and just gradually applying pressure through the means of a plastic aligner.

Invisalign works for those who have mild to moderate malocclusions. It is important to determine candidacy professionally, as Invisalign may not be very beneficial for some patients. Invisalign is a convenient means to skip the hassle of braces. If you have any questions regarding Invisalign and treatment, we welcome you to contact our office with confidence.
