Why You Never Want to Brush Immediately After Eating

In fact, you should wait about one hour before you brush your teeth. That is because brushing right after you eat can do more damage than good. The information below will give you more insight about brushing too soon.

Why Brushing Hurts Your Teeth If You Do It After You Eat

The enamel on the teeth is the hardest substance in the body. However, food acids can wear down the enamel after a time. Acid levels are higher during meals. To return these levels to the proper pH, the saliva needs to wash away food particles to create a healthy balance in the mouth. When the saliva can do its job, the enamel can continue to protect the teeth.

What Happens If You Brush Right after You Eat

If you brush right after you eat, you are actually injuring the teeth. Even if you use a toothbrush with soft bristles, this is true. Because the acid level is higher at this time, the abrasiveness of toothbrushing further weakens the tooth. Instead, you need to have the saliva rinse out the debris first before you brush your teeth. This process can be supported by drinking water or rinsing with it. You can also chew sugarless gum. Following either of these practices will increase the saliva production inside the mouth.

We can help you follow a regular plan of dental care and provide you with the tips needed to enjoy a healthier and more attractive smile. While you don't want to rush and brush your teeth right after a meal, you still need to brush your teeth. Usually, the best times to brush are in the morning and before you go to bed at night. Brush for about two minutes at a time. You also need to schedule regular professional dental cleanings and exams.
